The Artist Residency Project
February 11 - March 14, 2025
This residency program is designed for fine artists working across discipline, medium and platform. Through online platforms, it aims to deliver a robust, global residency experience. Working with SVA’s distinguished faculty, participants will develop their practice without the limitations of location or the necessity for travel. The Artist Residency Project aims to create an inclusive online space where artists can thrive, nurture their practice and build an active, engaged community.
Faculty will conduct remote studio visits and discuss each participant’s work on an individual basis, as well as facilitate group critiques and reading groups. Alongside these visits, daily activities and ways to connect will keep participants engaged with their community of artists, and a cohort of professional mentors spanning the fields of art, design, and contemporary practice. Special lectures by guest artists, critics, and gallery directors will provide further insight into the realities of the working artist in the present moment.
Faculty and lecturers have included Jodie Lyn-Kee-Chow, Gregory Coates, Jeca Rodriguez-Colon, Matthew Deleget, Tobi Kahn, Sohee Koo, Alois Kronschlaeger, Amy Myers, Iviva Olenick, Danica Phelps, Accra Shepp, Carlos Rosales-Silva and Allison Hewitt Ward. Visiting critics have included Deanna Evans, Ashley James, Alex Paik, Wallace Whitney, and Kat Ryals, among others.
Note: A portfolio is required for review and acceptance to this program. All students with an active registration in this course will be given free access to the Adobe Creative Cloud. This residency is fully online and offered through a combination of synchronous as well as asynchronous studio visits, critiques, lectures, discussions and activities. Synchronous sessions will be announced and scheduled in consideration of different time zones.

****You must be a University of New Mexico Taos Alum and/or current student in order to qualify for the The Artist Residency Project Winter/Spring 2025 UNM x SVA Fellowship.
The School of Visual Arts (SVA) Artist Residency program in Fine Arts is an internationally-renowned program that offers artists, designers and creative thinkers time, space and a supportive community in which to develop ideas and focus on their artistic direction.
On-campus residents each have their own semi-private studio housed within SVA’s MFA Fine Arts department. Work in the studio is supported by individual studio visits from core faculty as well as from visiting artists, critics and arts professionals. The program culminates in an open studio exhibition, which enables the participants to present their work to the public.
With an emphasis on shared experience and community building, The Summer Artist Residency Program provides a platform where participants can build and expand their networks and create lifelong connections with artists, critics, curators and other arts professionals. A robust schedule of group and one-on-one critiques helps to establish critical as well as social engagement within the Summer Residency Program community and beyond.
Current and recent faculty and guest lecturers include Heather Darcy-Bhandari, Ofri Cnaani, Media Farzin, Mark Thomas Gibson, Kameelah Janan Rasheed, Jerry Saltz, Jason Stopa, Mark Tribe, Carlos Rosales-Silva, Miguel Luciano, and Caroline Woolard.
Each year, The American Turkish Society offers a special scholarship to Turkish artists to attend one of SVA’s on-campus Artist Residency Programs. Please see available programs below:
On-Campus
- Fine Arts: Residency in Contemporary Practices
The program is open only to active professional artists residing in Turkey who are not represented by a gallery. Graduate and post-graduate students may apply. Applicants should have fluency in English sufficient enough for engaging in meaningful dialogue with other participants. For on-campus programs: tuition, housing, round-trip airfare, visa expenses, transportation in New York City, a stipend for living expenses, and a stipend for necessary art materials are provided.
Now in its fourth decade, this internationally renowned program offers artists an opportunity to work intensively in a private studio and receive individual critiques from faculty selected for their diversity, professional achievement and critical engagement. Artists are supported in their painting, drawing, printmaking, installation and mixed-media work, and are encouraged to push their practice to the next level, aesthetically and conceptually. Attention is given to contextualizing resident artists' work within contemporary interdisciplinary discourse.
